Email marketing

Last updated

You send email campaigns to a marketing list, using one of your email templates. Each campaign then has a report of who received, opened and clicked it.

Marketing lists

Go to Marketing → Marketing Lists. Every account has All Contacts, a built-in list of everyone on the account, which cannot be changed or deleted.

To make your own, click + Create List, give it a name and choose its type:

  • People I choose: you decide who is on it. Add people with Add Contacts, where you can filter and tick, or take Select all N matching, or with Add to List on a contact’s page.
  • Everyone matching filters, kept up to date: set filters, the same ones as on the Contacts page plus tags and forms, and anyone who matches is on the list, now and later. Change them with Edit filters.

How many lists you can make depends on your plan; All Contacts does not count towards it.

Email templates

Go to Marketing → Email Templates and click Create Template. Give it a name and a subject line, then write the email.

  • Images: click the image icon and pick one from Files, or click Upload from your computer, which also saves it to Files. Click an image in the email to change its alt text or replace it.
  • Videos: upload the video to YouTube (Unlisted keeps it to people who have the link), click the video icon and paste the link. The email shows the video’s picture with a play button that opens the video, because email apps cannot play video. Click the picture and use Change video to swap it.
  • Merge tags: personalise with {{first_name}}, {{last_name}} and {{email}}. Give a fallback for anyone without a name, such as {{first_name|there}}.

Save the template when it is ready. To start from an existing template, click its copy icon: the copy, named Copy of and the original name, opens for you to rename. Copies count towards your plan’s template limit.

Send a campaign

Admins only.

  1. On Marketing Lists, click View Contacts on the list you want to email, then Send Campaign.
  2. Choose the template under Select Email Template.
  3. Click Show Preview to check it.
  4. Click Send to, which shows how many subscribed people will get it, and confirm with Send Campaign.

The campaign is sent in the background, and you get a notification when it has finished. Anyone who has unsubscribed is left out. A campaign keeps its own copy of the email, so changing the template later does not change what was sent.

A campaign goes out straight away; it cannot be scheduled. To test one, send it to a small list with only yourself on it.

Campaigns come from your own domain once you have set one up (see email domain), and from mail.kabooly.com until then. Every campaign carries your email footer and an unsubscribe link. How many emails you can send a month depends on your plan.

Campaign results

Reports → Email Campaigns lists every campaign sent. Click one for its report: Sent, Delivered, Bounced, Marked as spam, Unique opens, Open rate (of those delivered), Unique clicks, Click rate, Unsubscribes, Failed to send and Still sending, with a list of recipients you can filter.

Opens are counted with a small invisible image in the email, and clicks with tracked links.

Unsubscribes and bounces

Someone who clicks the unsubscribe link in a campaign stops getting your marketing emails. An email that hard bounces, or that is marked as spam, unsubscribes that contact automatically. You can also turn Subscribed to marketing emails off on a contact’s page.

New contacts start as subscribed, so only add people who have agreed to hear from you.
